"Back to One" is a series of informal sharing sessions by passionate individuals from the film community, seeking to inspire and impart practical tips and knowledge that fill up the gaps in our current curriculum. In film terms, it means for everything and everyone to return to their positions with a clear idea of roles. We hope that these sessions will engage and connect the local film community and allow us to grow together as a whole.

These sessions are targeted at film students but we also welcome film enthusiasts who have an interest in the subject matter.

This session we invited three speakers who recently graduated to share on Art Direction - Ian Kong, Harng Foong and Julie H. Liew

Ian Kong is an aspiring director and production designer. His foray in filmmaking began with set and costume design, especially those that involve craft elements, before progressing to student films, commercial productions and music videos. Ian also writes and directs, with a particular interest in fusing real-life, metaphors and the surreal. The themes in his work include making the familiar unfamiliar and psychological obsessions with the hope of reframing perspectives.

Harng Foong is an artist who believes designed experiences through visual art and design is the way to go. Often working with patterns, prints, textiles, installation and production design, Harng supports and encourages the involvement of the audience through stunning experiential interactions. He is also the founder of Recyclofashion, a studio that advocates alternative materials for art, design and fashion.

Julie H. Liew received a Diploma in Fine Art (Sculpture) in 2011 from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore. She has been working and experimenting with a variety of 2D and 3D traditional media, and uses this foundation in her production design practice. She is currently pursuing a Degree in Art, Design and Media (Digital Filmmaking) and her interest lies in Art Direction and Production Design. She has worked in the art and wardrobe departments of several commercial and independent film and television projects, including advertisements for Grabtaxi and UOB. She hopes to continue as a freelance production designer and eventually work on feature films or animations.
